South Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland has praised the work of the 10160 volunteers in South Swindon and is encouraging others to consider volunteering their time to help their local community.
The MP’s comments come during Volunteers’ Week. Volunteers’ Week is the annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.
Charity Commission data highlights that there are 10160 volunteers working in the constituency of South Swindon, and many more throughout the country. The work of volunteers is vital in allowing local charities and organisations to make a difference in their community, the voluntary sector and society as a whole.
Volunteers are at the heart of the charity sector, offering their time and energy to help those in need. This includes charity trustees—most of whom are volunteers. The Charity Commission offers a wide array of guidance and support to help trustees run their charities well so they can improve lives and strengthen society.
Sir Robert Buckland MP said:
“I have enjoyed volunteering with many outstanding charities here in South Swindon over the years, all of which rely on the dedication of volunteers. I want to thank all those who are giving up their time to support our local charities and congratulate them on everything they are doing to help these great organisations thrive.
“Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and to tackle loneliness and isolation. As well as helping others, volunteering has also been shown to improve volunteers' wellbeing too.”
Orlando Fraser KC, Chair of the Charity Commission, said: “Amidst tightening economic pressures, Volunteers’ Week reminds us that there is more we can give to charity than just money. I would like to extend the Charity Commission’s gratitude to volunteers in South Swindon, who give their time to improve their community, strengthen society and bring people together. Volunteers are the lifeblood of charity, and it is right that they are celebrated and commended for their contribution to our nations.”
